In 2024 we celebrate 30 years of guiding and instruction. Acadia Mountain Guides is Maine's only full-service climbing school. The school was founded by and is still owned and operated by Jon Tierney. Jon is one of only 200 internationally certified IFMGA/AMGA mountain guides working in the U.S. The school is also the only climbing school in Maine to be fully accredited by the AMGA and PCIA for all terrain types.
Avalanches do occur in New England - it is best to be prepared so you can shred with confidence! We offer AIARE Avalanche courses almost every weekend throughout the winter with most courses taking place on or near Mount Washington.
What is AIARE (American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education)?
“AIARE was established in 1998 as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit educational organization to create a researched-based avalanche education model for backcountry users with the belief that avalanche education, research, and training can prevent injuries and fatalities due to avalanches. AIARE develops and disseminates research-based avalanche curriculum to over 100 Providers in the US, South America, Europe and Asia.”

Katahdin and Mount Washington Winter Ascents
Embark on an extraordinary winter adventure with Acadia Mountain Guides as we invite you to join us on an ascent of Katahdin, Maine's crown jewel, or Mount Washington in the crisp embrace of winter.
Our guides, with their experience and extensive training, are your key to unlocking the secrets of these iconic peaks in the challenging winter environment.
A summit climb of Katahdin is typically a two-day ascent requiring overnight camping. Our ascents of Mount Washington often take a different route to the summit that keeps us out of the wind longer, avoids the crowds, and provides a more alpine-like ascent.
Join us for a unique and unparalleled winter experience that will leave you with a profound connection to this rugged and awe-inspiring mountain.
Ice Climbing / Mountain Skills
